Creative Writing

Scarlett McCarthy received a Silver Key for her Senior Portfolio in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

The Young Arts Competition recognized Scarlett McCarthy with a Merit Award

Scholastic Art and Writing Award recognized Ariel Bevan, Whitney Aviles-Low, and Becky Hirsch with Honorable Mention awards.

Creative Communication: Kalinah White, Isaac Dwyer, and Becky Hirsch all had pieces accepted

Isaac Dwyer’s play “Cupcakes” won Second Place in the Ten-Minute Play Contest at Princeton University.

Scarlett McCarthy won 2nd place for her short story, “The Tin Walls”, in the Bennington Young Writer’s Awards.

Dance

Mauricio Fernandez Robles was a semifinalist in the Non-classical Dance category in the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards.

Moving Pictures

Penelope won the Technological Achievement Award at the Screen Film Festival in Santa Monica. The film Penelope was written and directed by Scarlett Urbano ’11 and was produced at Idylllwild Arts.

Penelope also won the Technical Award at the Screen Film Festival in Santa Monica.

Penelope won the second place award at the Dominique Dunne Film Fest in Colorado Springs.

Rockstars: The Pete Weaver Story, written and directed by Laura Holliday ’11, won the audience choice award in its category at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY).

Rockstars also won the first place award at the Dominique Dunn Film Festival in Colorado Springs.

Penelope was selected to screen at the prestigious Newport Beach International Film Festival.

Thoughts of a Dying Atheist, by Gurk Ilbay ’09, was an Official Selection of the Beverly Hills Film Festival’s Screenplay Competition.

The Other Side, written and directed by Brit Wigintton ’11, and 18 Minutes by Alexis Echavarria ’06, chosen for the KCET series Fine Cut.

Music

The Steinway Society of Riverside County recognized three Idyllwild Arts Academy pianists in their annual competition.

  • Julian Jenson – Doug Ashcraft, teacher
  • Dong Kim – Andrew Park, teacher
  • Benjamin Kleinerman – Nelms McKelvain, teacher

Additionally, Summer Program alumnus Esther Yaghoubian was also recognized.

Cellist Tiffany Christensen won second-place in this year’s Rotary Club of Murrieta annual music contest.

Julian Jenson was a semifinalist in the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards Classical Instrumental category.

Shen Liu was a semifinalist in the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards Classical Instrumental category and received Honorable Mention.

Idyllwild Arts Jazz Combo won 1st place in their division at the Berklee Music Festival.

Lake Jiroudek was recognized with the “Superior Musicianship” award at the Berklee Music Festival

Idyllwild Arts Jazz Ensemble won 1st place in the Reno Jazz Festival

Downbeat Magazine – Lake Jiroudek 2012 outstanding jazz guitarist

Lake Jiroudek received Honorable Mention in the Jazz Instrumental division of the Los Angeles Music Spotlight Awards.

Lake Jiroudek was named to the “2012 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra” sponsored by the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Visual Art

JunHee Huh received a gold key for his painting “The Red Horizon”, silver keys for his paintings “Glory” and  “Mung” in the California Region of The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Zienna Stewart received a silver key and an honorable mention in the California Region of The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Chi-Hsuan Vita Wang was a semifinalist in the 2012 Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award in the Visual Arts 2D Art Category.
